Residents of the small town of São Lourenço do Bairro were shocked after the town’s streets were inundated with red wine. The incident occurred when two tanks owned by Destilaria Levira, carrying 600,000 gallons of wine, or more than 2 million liters, suddenly burst.

Since then, videos of the red liquid flowing down the hills like a river have circulated on social media and left locals astonished by the images. The wine flood also triggered an environmental alert as authorities had to quickly find a way to prevent the wine from reaching a nearby river and contaminating the water. Firefighters managed to block the liquid and divert it to a field. The wine-soaked soil was later removed and taken to a special treatment facility.
